Mauri琀椀us’s Energy Sector Focuses on Peak Load Management
On Monday 22 September 2025, a
half-day workshop on Peak Demand
Management was inaugurated at the
Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis.
Organized by the Central Electricity
Board (CEB) in partnership with Business
Mauri琀椀us (BM), the event aims to promote
renewable energy adop琀椀on and energysaving ini琀椀a琀椀ves across Mauri琀椀us.
Attendees included Professor Khalil
Elahee, Chairman of the Energy E昀케ciency
Management O昀케ce and the Mauri琀椀us
Renewable Energy Agency; Mr. Kevin
Ramkaloan, CEO of BM; and various
stakeholders from the public and private
sectors.
Presenta琀椀ons by Professor Elahee and
CEB representatives, Mr. Damodar
Doseeah and Mr. Mahesh Dayal, focused
on ongoing projects and load management
strategies during peak hours.
Professor Elahee emphasized the
importance of stakeholder collabora琀椀on
to foster dialogue, share best prac琀椀ces
and address opportuni琀椀es and challenges
in energy management. He highlighted
the need to develop a culture of energy
e昀케ciency through awareness, capacitybuilding, and coordinated e昀昀orts, urging
stakeholders to work together on a
comprehensive plan to strengthen energy
sector resilience.
Mr. Doseeah discussed the challenges
faced by the CEB in managing rising
peak demand, which recently hit a record
high of 567.9 megawa琀琀s. He noted that
meeting this demand is increasingly
difficult, potentially necessitating load
shedding as a last resort. He appealed
to businesses and the public to modify
energy consumption habits, especially
during peak hours (18:00 to 21:30), to
help ease grid pressure.
Former Gender Minister Arrested Over The昀琀 Incident
On Friday 19 September 2025, Kalpana
Koonjoo-Shah was detained by the TerreRouge Criminal Inves琀椀ga琀椀on Department
(CID) following a complaint from a security
supervisor at the Carrefour hypermarket
in Riche Terre. The security footage
reportedly showed the former minister
of gender, placing products into her
bag without paying for them, with an
es琀椀mated value of Rs 2,140.
Subsequently, she was arrested and
taken into custody. On Monday 22
September 2025, Kalpana KoonjooShah was granted conditional release
from the Pamplemousses Court, where
a provisional the昀琀 charge was retained
against her. She was required to pay a bail
of Rs 15,000 and sign a acknowledgment
of debt for Rs 50,000.
In a statement issued on the same day,
she announced that she had informed
the leader of the MSM (Militant Socialist
Movement) of her decision to withdraw
from all party ac琀椀vi琀椀es and poli琀椀cal life
un琀椀l the ma琀琀er is resolved. She expressed
that she has been subjected to pe琀琀y and
degrading a琀琀acks following the allega琀椀ons
made against her.

The former minister emphasized that these
ac琀椀ons not only a昀昀ect her but also her
family and loved ones. She acknowledged
the procedural irregulari琀椀es encountered
during the ongoing investigation but
rea昀케rmed her full con昀椀dence in her legal
team and the jus琀椀ce system to uncover
the truth.
