Honoring SSR: 125 Years of Legacy
In commemoration of the 125th
Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur
Ramgoolam (SSR), the na琀椀on re昀氀ects on
his profound legacy as both a dis琀椀nguished
political leader and a humanist who
inspired Mauri琀椀ans to believe in their
collec琀椀ve poten琀椀al.
On Thursday 18 September 2025, Prime
Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam
inaugurated a First Day Cover dedicated
to SSR and launched an exhibi琀椀on 琀椀tled
‘The Life and Legacy of SSR’ at the City
Council of Port Louis. The event was
organized to honor SSR’s contribu琀椀ons
and was held in conjunc琀椀on with the
anniversary celebra琀椀ons. The exhibi琀椀on
o昀昀ers a comprehensive overview of SSR’s
life, vision and achievements, highligh琀椀ng
his roles as Mayor of Port Louis, Prime
Minister of Mauritius, and GovernorGeneral.

The Prime Minister also reflected on
SSR’s core values of patrio琀椀sm, humility,
service and belief in the poten琀椀al of every
Mauri琀椀an. These principles guided major

the University of Mauri琀椀us in 1965. His
emphasis on accessible healthcare, social
jus琀椀ce and equal opportuni琀椀es ensured
that all ci琀椀zens could aspire to a be琀琀er
future.

Following the proceedings, the Prime
Minister paid tribute with a wreath-laying
ceremony at SSR’s statue at the Port Louis
Waterfront, honoring his enduring legacy
and contribu琀椀ons to the na琀椀on.

The ceremony was a琀琀ended by notable
昀椀gures, including Deputy Prime Minister
Mr. Paul Raymond Bérenger, ministers,
junior ministers, members of the
National Assembly, members of the
diploma琀椀c corps and other dis琀椀nguished
personali琀椀es. The event was organized
by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in
collabora琀椀on with the Port Louis City
Council and Mauri琀椀us Post Ltd.
During his address, Prime Minister
Ramgoolam emphasized that the occasion
serves to honor and celebrate the enduring
legacy of SSR, widely regarded as the
Father of the Na琀椀on and the Architect of
Mauri琀椀us’s independence. He highlighted
SSR’s steady dedica琀椀on to the country’s
progress, especially his commitment to
China Hosts Celebratory Event in Mauri琀椀us for Na琀椀onal Day
A celebration marking the 76th
anniversary of the founding of the
People’s Republic of China was hosted
by Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary Dr. Huang Shifang on
Friday 19 September 2025. The event
took place at the InterCon琀椀nental Resort
Mauri琀椀us in Balaclava.
The occasion was a琀琀ended by prominent
figures including the President of
Mauritius, Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool;
Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra
Ramgoolam; Deputy Prime Minister Mr.
Paul Raymond Bérenger; and Minister
of Foreign A昀昀airs, Regional Integra琀椀on
and Interna琀椀onal Trade, Mr. Dhananjay
Ramful. Ministers, junior ministers,
diplomatic representatives and other
dis琀椀nguished guests also par琀椀cipated.
During the event, dignitaries raised toasts
to President Xi Jinping of China, to the
prosperity of Mauri琀椀us and China, and
to the strengthening of their bilateral and
friendly rela琀椀ons.
In her speech, Dr. Huang Shifang
expressed gratitude for the ongoing
support for China and the development of
China-Mauri琀椀us rela琀椀ons. She highlighted
China’s remarkable achievements over the
past 76 years, including rapid economic

growth and social stability.
Ambassador Shifang emphasized China’s
commitment to expanding high-level
opening-up and sharing development
opportuni琀椀es globally. She noted China’s
status as a major trading partner with
over 150 countries and regions and
reiterated China’s dedica琀椀on to building
a community with a shared future
for humanity, emphasizing peace and
coopera琀椀on.
Addressing China-Mauritius ties, Dr.
Huang described Mauritius as a vital
partner in Africa and the Indian Ocean
region. She recalled that since establishing
diploma琀椀c rela琀椀ons 53 years ago, both
na琀椀ons have maintained mutual respect
and pursued shared development.
Last year, the rela琀椀onship was elevated
to a Strategic Partnership. Ambassador
Shifang outlined China’s support for
Mauritius through various initiatives,
including promo琀椀ng trade, development
coopera琀椀on, human resource capacitybuilding, financial collaboration and
cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
She reaffirmed China’s willingness
to collaborate with the Mauritian
government, support mutual interests,
strengthen trust and continue their
tradi琀椀onal friendship.
