Mauri琀椀us Enhances Ophthalmology Services
On Wednesday 17 September 2025, the
Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr. Anil
Kumar Bachoo, visited pa琀椀ents at New
Souillac Hospital who recently underwent
complex corneal gra昀琀 surgeries. These
procedures were performed by Dr.
Charles Qian Yu, Assistant Professor of
Ophthalmology at the Byers Eye Ins琀椀tute,
Stanford University, United States.

Hospital, showcasing the government’s
commitment to accessible healthcare. He
further praised the outstanding e昀昀orts of
the medical personnel involved.
Dr. Charles Qian Yu highlighted that
Stanford University prides itself on

Mauritius, collaborating with a local
medical team to conduct ophthalmologic
surgeries in partnership with Swiss
Medical Services. A total of six pa琀椀ents —
including four teenagers and two elderly
individuals — are bene昀椀琀椀ng from these
interven琀椀ons.
In a statement, Minister Bachoo
commended Dr. Yu’s dedication and
expertise, emphasizing that these
advanced eye surgeries are expected to
signi昀椀cantly improve pa琀椀ents’ quality of
life. He also expressed apprecia琀椀on for
the support provided by Swiss Medical
Services.
The Minister recalled that, previously, such
complex surgeries had been performed
solely within the private sector at a cost
of approximately Rs 200 million last year.

Integration and International Trade,
Hon. Dhananjay Ram昀氀ul, met with four
newly appointed Mauri琀椀an ambassadors
on Monday 22 September 2025. The
mee琀椀ng, held at the Ministry’s o昀케ces
in Port Louis, marked an important step
in reinforcing Mauritius’s diplomatic
rela琀椀onships.
The ambassadors, presented with their
letters of appointment, include H.E.
Mrs. Sheila Bappoo, High Commissioner
to India; H.E. Mrs. Mireille Martin,
High Commissioner to South Africa;
H.E. Mr. Munsoo Kurrimbaccus, High

Commissioner to Pakistan; and H.E. Mr.
Reza Gunny, Ambassador to Egypt.
During the discussions, various aspects
of Mauri琀椀us’s diploma琀椀c rela琀椀ons with
these countries were addressed. Minister
Ram昀氀ul emphasized the importance of
these missions in advancing the country’s
interests and expressed his con昀椀dence in
the ambassadors’ abili琀椀es to succeed in
their roles.
The mee琀椀ng also provided a pla琀昀orm
for dialogue on strengthening bilateral
琀椀es and exploring new opportuni琀椀es for
collabora琀椀on.
